What is Methadone?
Methadone is a synthetic narcotic that is usually used to help opioid abusers end their addiction and stop using. It was originally made during a morphine shortage in the 1940s. Methadone can be detected in the urine for up to 3 to 5 days after it was last used.
Methadone is used during detoxification and withdrawal from opioid narcotics. It produces many of the same effects as morphine or heroin, making it easier for users to switch from illicit heroin to a prescribed methadone.
Methadone causes some of the same effects as narcotics, including drowsiness, sedation, and sleepiness. It can also cause itching and sweating, similar to heroin. People who use methadone are at risk for both psychological and physical dependence, potentially making it difficult for someone to stop using it.
