What is barbiturates?
Barbiturates are a class of medications that are made from a substance known as barbituric acid. Barbituric acid does not produce any effects itself, but the compounds made from it inhibit nerve cells in the brain by encouraging activity of the neurotransmitter GABA. It is commonly prescribed as a sedative, anesthetic or anxiolytic. There are two types of barbiturates — short-acting and long-acting. Short-acting barbiturates are only found in the urine for a couple of days. Long-acting barbiturates may be detected for up to a few weeks.
Barbiturates are have been used to induce sleep, treat seizures and as an anesthetic. However, researchers and physicians have discovered that these drugs can produce both physical and psychological dependence. In addition, there is not a big difference between a therapeutic and toxic dose. These drugs are not frequently used anymore for that reason.
Barbiturates produce a feeling of relaxation and sedation. They can make users feel tired, euphoric and sleepy, and can also reduce a person’s inhibitions. In higher doses, barbiturates can impair memory, judgment and coordination. They can also make users feel irritated and paranoid.
