What is Marijuana?

Marijuana is a psycho-active drug that is made from the cannabis plant. The substance that is responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Marijuana is a hallucinogenic, sedative drug considered the primary active compound of the 400+ chemicals in the cannabis sativa plant.  While some legal use of THC takes place, such as the prescription Marinol used to treat wasting in cancer/HIV patients, most THC positive results are due to illicit use.

It is difficult to metabolize THC, so Marijuana can remain detectable in the urine for up to several weeks. This compound is stored in the fatty tissues, so chronic users will take longer to remove THC from the body than the occasional user.

Tetrahydrocannabinols (THC, Δ-9-THC, Δ-1-THC), are the most active of the principle constituents, as well as the major metabolites, of cannabinoids such as marijuana and hashish.

Marijuana can be used to relieve pain or anxiety. Cancer patients often use marijuana for its use as an appetite stimulant and anti-nausea compound. It can also help with weight loss from chronic illness, alleviate seizures or help with the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

Marijuana causes relaxation, disinhibition and happiness. In some people it can cause paranoia or disorganized thinking, or even panic attacks. Increased appetite and drowsiness are also common with marijuana use. Physically, marijuana causes blood shot eyes, dry mouth and coughing (from smoking).
