What is hepatitis B core antibody?

Most cases of acute viral hepatitis are caused by Hepatitis A virus (HAV), Hepatitis B (HBV), or Hepatitis C virus (HIV). HBV alone is estimated to have infected 400 million people throughout the globe, making HBV one of the most common human pathogens. The complex antigen found in on the surface of HBV is called Hepatitis B surface antigen. HBsAg appears in the patient’s blood from 4~12 weeks on average after infection and precedes onset of clinical symptoms of hepatitis.
HBcAb is the first detectable antibody to appear around 8 weeks after infection with HBV. Hence it is an early indicator of acute infection. HBc antibodies do not neutralize the virus. HBcAb persists in the serum even after infection with HBV has been overcome.
HBsAb appears several weeks after disappearance of HBsAg and existing for a long time. It is a kind of antibody for protection. HBsAb detection can be used to monitor the prognosis of patients recovering from hepatitis B viral infection. The appearance of HBsAb suggests that the patient has prior immunological exposure to the hepatitis B surface antigen and indicates that the patient is in a convalescent state recovering from an acute phase of hepatitis B.
